No Tunnel Alliance Begs Supporters Not to Vote No-No
Apparently the No Tunnel Alliance has become alarmed that some of its members who support a retrofit are saying they plan to vote no-no. (By the way, it has been our experience in talking to voters that many retrofit supporters and Viaduct preservationists do indeed plan to vote no-no). From a No Tunnel Alliance email:
Someone on this NTA announcement list wrote back that they are voting NO on both measures, because they support a Viaduct repair / retrofit.
There are numerous people on the NTA Steering Committee who support a Viaduct repair / retrofit option.
The consensus of the Steering Committee is a ballot win of NO Tunnel, NO Elevated will be used by the City power brokers to advocate to TEAR DOWN the Viaduct and use all surface roads to pick up the lost Viaduct capacity, with a massive expansion of transit.
Heaven forbid! Tear down the Viaduct and massively expand transit? The horror! The horror!
Therefore, NTA has chosen to support a NO Tunnel, YES Elevated ballot vote to accomplish ...
1) defeat the Tunnel option
2) defeat the surface option
3) keep an Elevated option in playOnce those 3 goals have been achieved, our Viaduct repair / retrofit advocates can lobby the Governor and Legislature to change from rebuild to repair (as more cost effective).
If you support a Viaduct repair / retrofit option, NTA still advocates a ballot vote of NO Tunnel, YES Elevated as your best strategy to get to any repair option after the election.
