Erica Barnett reports on Slog that John Manning is running for the City Council position that Peter Steinbrueck is vacating. His opponents at this point are Venus Velazquez and Bruce Harrell, both of whom Barnett profiles in this week's The Stranger. John Manning has a problematic past (after serving only one year, he resigned from the City Council in 1996 after assaulting his then-wife), but The Stranger and the P-I endorsed him when he ran in 2003. He lost, and embarrassingly applied for the position that was given to Sally Clark last year. Still, we welcome his entry, given the paucity of political competition in this year's Council races. We don't know much about Velazquez or Harrell yet, and would be happy for a vigorous race that better defines what the candidates plan to do. Of course, we'd like to see definitive statements from the candidates on the Viaduct replacement, more density throughout the city, and how to make the city more accessible for more people and families.
